Do I Need a Break from Birth Control?

What the science says about taking a pause.

The short answer? There’s no medical reason to take a break from your method unless you want to. Most birth control methods can be used safely for years, even decades. Don’t believe the myth you might’ve heard that it’s a good idea to “take a break from birth control” every so often—to let your body “reset” or because it’s “not good to be on it too long.”

That said, it’s totally okay if you decide to stop or switch methods. Maybe your goals have changed. Maybe you’re dealing with side effects you don’t love. Maybe you’re just curious about what your body feels like without it. Whatever the reason, it’s your call. A provider can help you figure out what makes the most sense for you right now.

If you do take a break, it’s good to know what to expect. Your period might take a little while to come back, or it might come back right away. If you had stuff like heavy cramps, acne, or irregular cycles before birth control, those symptoms might return. And of course, if you’re not trying to get pregnant, you’ll need to use another method like condoms, withdrawal, and/or emergency contraception.

At the end of the day, there’s no rule that says you have to stop using birth control after a certain amount of time. You can stay on it, switch it up, or take a break—whatever feels right. If you’re not sure what’s next, The Right Time can help you connect with a clinic that offers free or low-cost care and answers your questions without judgment.
