Can You Feel the IUD During Sex?

A common question with a reassuring answer.
An IUD (intrauterine device) is one of the most effective and low-maintenance forms of birth control available. Once it’s inserted into the uterus, you can pretty much forget about it for anywhere from three to 12 years. But many people wonder: Will I — or my partner—be able to feel it during sex?
The short answer? Probably not. But let’s dig into the details. (For answers to your specific questions about IUDs, make an appointment to talk to a provider at your nearest The Right Time health center.)
Every IUD has two thin strings that come down through the cervix into the top of the vagina. These strings are there so a provider can check placement or remove the IUD when it’s time. You can also check them yourself by feeling into your vagina with clean fingers. They should feel like a thin fishing line at the top of your vaginal canal. If they feel shorter or longer than usual, or if you can't feel them at all, check in with your provider.
For most people, the IUD is unnoticeable during sex — no one feels a thing. Your partner may notice the IUD strings, especially if they’re a little long or stiff right after insertion. Over time, the strings usually soften and curl up around the cervix.
If your partner says they feel something sharp or painful, or if you feel pain or discomfort during sex, that’s worth a call to your provider — just to make sure the IUD is still positioned correctly. Most of the time, no changes are needed. But if the strings are bothering you or your partner:
- Your provider can trim them.
- Your provider can show you how to tuck the strings around your cervix so they’re out of the way.
- You can experiment with different positions to see what feels most comfortable.
