Diaphragm: Testimonials
There’s a few reasons why I chose a diaphragm method. My doctor kind of first explained to me all the methods that were available. And I was put on a few different kinds of birth control pills. And the pills just worked my body in weird ways. Each one had a different effect on my body, you know, from my breasts hurting to me just being in a bad mood all day. And once I tried a few different pills, I was tired of it. I didn’t really like taking pills every day anyway. I decided that I didn’t want to take pharmaceutical medication any more. And I asked my doctor if there was anything else, you know, that I could take. And they showed me the diaphragm and my doctor was really clear about why it works, how it works, and I just came to like it. So I figured out, you know, I positioned it. I can feel my body. And that’s one thing I’m really good at, is just being aware. And that’s what I think is really important, is people should be really aware of their body and their makeup, because everybody is so different. You know, and that’s how your doctor – they’ll tell you how to use it, how to put it in. That’s the most important part. Once you can get your diaphragm in and suctioned in cork-like, you’ll be fine. The diaphragm definitely gives a woman control over the situation. You know, as far as condoms go, the male is usually carrying the condom. It’s usually in his possession. You have no idea where that condom’s been, where it’s coming from, how old it is, you know, or how effective it could be. You know, maybe it’s gotten a hole in it, maybe it’s been, you know, somewhere you don’t want it to be. So basically I just feel like it’s a more sanitary and more hygienic and more controlled way of using birth control. You know, it’s like you know what’s going on with your diaphragm. You can lay in bed and put in a diaphragm with the lights on, that’s no problem. You know what I mean? It just depends who you’re with, basically. You know, if you want to leave the room, if you want to put it in then, it’s really up to you. If you’re in a moment or something and you have to excuse yourself to put in your diaphragm, it’s not that big of a deal. You know what I mean? It’s like – it’s like, “Sorry, excuse me, let me go slip into something more comfortable,” or something like that, you know? I think your partner will understand, you know If you’re all hot and heavy, yeah, you might want to do it – put it in before. You know what I mean? Just be aware of what you’re going to do, what you think you’re going to do. You know, it’s like a male putting on a condom. When he wants to put it on, he puts it on, you know. When you want to put on your diaphragm, you put it in. And you go ahead and have sex. You know, you don’t need it when you don’t need it, and you need it when you do need it. That’s basically it. My name is Rachel. I’m 25 years old, and I use diaphragms for birth control.

Put it in. Have sex. That's basically it.
Rachel’s first method of birth control was the the pill. She didn’t like the first brand she was tried, so she asked for another. Then another. Each had different side effects and eventually Rachel decided that hormonal methods just weren’t for her.
After her doctor explained how a diaphragm works, Rachel decided to give it a go. And she’s been happy with her choice ever since.
Rachel feels in control when using her diaphragm and finds it easy to put in—even when she’s already in the heat of the moment. She just excuses herself to “slip into something more comfortable.”
